Usually, when the bill comes most of the time we are left considering whether to tip 10, 15 or 20 percent. For one group that called in for food at Busboys & Poets in Washington DC, they decided that 10-20 percent just wouldn’t do.
The waitress Rosalynd Harris, found herself waiting on a table of Texans wearing cowboy hats.
Rosalynd had recently participated in the Women’s March and the men were in town for Donald Trump’s inauguration, you could say that their beliefs were opposing.
Based on their differences you might have presumed their interactions could have been frosty and uncomfortable?! However, it turned out to be the exact opposite.
After the men had finished their meal and paid the bill Rosalynd was left completely blow away by what she found! a $450 tip for a bill that only came to $72.60.
That was not all that was with the bill, one of the men had also left a note for her.
The handwritten note read:
“We may come from different cultures and may disagree on certain issues, but if everyone would share their smile and kindness like your beautiful smile, our country will come together as one people. Not race. Not gender. Just American. God Bless!”
“You might automatically assume if someone supports Trump that they have ideas about you,” Rosalyn shared. “But these men are more embracing than even some of my more liberal friends, and there was a real authenticity in our exchange. This definitely reshaped my perspective. Republican, Democrat, liberal are all subcategories to what we are experiencing. It instils a lot of hope.”
This act of kindness can hopefully act as inspiration, to not just Americans, but people all over the word! When it seems like we are more divided than ever, this story highlights that every single one of us can make a change. The first part of that is accepting that while our beliefs might be different we can still respect one another, and love thy neighbour.
