It’s never a happy thing when a new dog is brought into an animal shelter. They should be in a nice, warm and love home. But for Julep, she wasn’t so lucky.
Julep’s owner, who had loved her so much, recently passed away. The family was unable to care for the 18-year-old, white faced dog.
According to Alex John Tolley, a spokesperson for Washington D.C.’s Humane Rescue Alliance, Julep is one of the oldest, “if not the oldest” dog to ever come through. “She’s lived a long and happy life.”
The shelter began to look for a new home for Julep, saying that she is looking for a fresh new start and that she “doesn’t need much, just a couch to sleep on and a human to love.”
And then Wayne Lerch had come along after hearing the news. His beloved dog Jasmine had suddenly just passed away and was heartbroken.
He felt deeply moved by Julep’s story, so much that the very day after spotting her online, he showed up at the adoption center, before they even opened.
Lerch came on his motorcycle, in an attempt to not feel pressured to adopt Julep on the spot. But as soon as the doors opened, and Julep and Lerch met, he said, “I knew right away.”
Lerch then went right home to get his car, and then He and Julep left the shelter together.
“There wasn’t a dry eye in the room. We see a lot of happy endings and try not to get too emotional. But the combination of her age and Wayne’s obvious adoration for his new ‘old lady’ left us in tears,” said Tolley.
Lerch has said that her being home has been great for the both of them, as she is helping him heal from Jasmine’s passing. He knows that even though she is healthy, she may not be around for a long time. But he just wants to make that time that she does have wonderful.
Lerch renamed Julep Tootie, after his grandmother, and a nod to the dessert tuttie frutti, since she cannot seem to get enough treats.
“I couldn’t let her spend one more night in the shelter. She’s saving me as much as I’m helping her,” said Lerch.
We are so happy that these two are having such a wonderful time together, and we hope they have TONS of time with one another!
